Sin and the single mother: The history of lone parenthood
25 May 2012, 6:30 pm
It all began with an abbreviated birth certificate that carried only the barest details. I had known since childhood that I was born 'out of wedlock', and that my father had deserted my mother as soon as he discovered she was pregnant in November 1950. But it wasn't until I looked up my full birth certificate after my mother's death in 2001 that I discovered I'd been born in a hostel for ...

9 May 2012, 11:46 am
Yves here. Readers seem to like Kervick's storytelling format, and he seemed to take NC readers' suggestion to heart regarding making it a bit more compact next time. By Dan Kervick, who does research in decision theory and analytic metaphysics. Cross posted from New Economic Perspectives Imagine a world and a society in which 500 people own everything – absolutely everything.
There Does Seem to Be Such a Thing As Too Much Kale
8 May 2012, 4:07 pm
David Rees, we're looking at you. Over on Slate, Scott Jacobson shares his touching tale of moving to L.A. and bowing to pressure to adopt an all-kale diet. While keeping a "kale journal," Jacobson finds that his favorite leafy green is a bit high maintenance ("kale must actually be massaged "), not beloved by cats, and can be enjoyed as a flavor of Orbitz gum [ Editor's note: not really ]. An absolute must-read on taxes (by Stephen King)
30 April 2012, 4:57 pm
A lot of things drive me crazy (people making a left turn on 16th and Bryant at 5 p.m., backing up traffic for an entire block; people who get to park in the midde of the street on Sunday because the cops don't ticket churchgoers; politicians who say "I'll take a look at that" as a way to duck a question, dog owners who leave piles of shit in the middle of the sidewalk... don't get me started).

25 May 2012, 10:59 pm
Suddenly, Ryan's bite the bullet approach seems like Ebenezer Scrooge's lament on why he failed to give more to help the poor: "Are there no prisons, are there no
workhouses?" Obama, like Nixon, is placing himself in a position of being the only barrier ...
New plot rocks Establishment - Morning Star
25 May 2012, 11:32 am
They'll be accusing Ed Miliband of being left-wing next. At a time when the Tory right appear to be eagerly dragging us back to the dark ages, or at least
workhouses and rickets, it is good to see that at least Jeremy Hunt is keeping up with the times.
Right to Food/Open Letter to PM - Owen Sound Sun Times
25 May 2012, 9:30 am
I for one shudder to think that Canadian identity is becoming one that Ebenezer Scrooge would endorse, relying upon
workhouses and prisons to provide for the poor. I appeal to the Prime Minister to publicly reject such a vision for Canada. Let me be ...

Or wealthy enough to shell out in the visitors’ café. The rest, like orphans in Victorian
workhouses, eat the gruel or go hungry. A handful of hospitals DO allocate to their kitchens the resources to provide decent meals. The others cut every conceivable corner.
WITT: In the queue and muddling through - Washington Times
8 May 2012, 6:05 pm
After all, in spite of their refined taste and delicate sensibilities, the smartly dressed patrons of yesteryear were the same people who scrapped welfare benefits completely and sent the unemployed to
workhouses. We also have more than 10 times ...
