As winter approaches they bore deeper into the wood in order to keep warm. The following summer they will pupate in shallow wood. There is one life cycle per year. To control lilac borer you can prune out the larger stems and allow the plant to re-sucker.

As the larva moves to the edge of a leaf to pupate, the leaf curls around the pupa. Leafminers especially like young foliage, so don't overfertilize; tender new growth is more vulnerable. Discourage them by spraying new leaves with neem or dormant oil.

In early spring the cutworms may damage wheat and alfalfa fields and plants in gardens. Army cutworms become full grown by mid-spring, burrow into the soil, and pupate. Between three to six weeks later, the adult "miller" stage of the insect emerges.
