We extend the formalism of Random Boolean Networks with
canalizing rules to multilevel complex networks. The formalism allows to model genetic networks in which each gene might take part in more than one signaling pathway. We use a semi-annealed approach to study the stability of this class of models when coupled in a multiplex network and show that the analytical results are in good agreement with numerical simulations. Our main finding is that the multiplex structure provides a mechanism for the stabilization of the system and of chaotic regimes of individual layers. Our results help understanding why some genetic networks that are theoretically expected to operate in the chaotic regime can actually display dynamical stability. - Imox

Boolean network models of molecular regulatory networks have been used successfully in computational systems biology. The Boolean functions that appear in published models tend to have special properties, in particular the property of being nested
canalizing, a property inspired by the concept of canalization in evolutionary biology. It has been shown that networks comprised of nested
canalizing functions have dynamic properties that make them suitable for modeling molecular regulatory networks, namely a small number of (large) attractors, as well as relatively short limit cycles. This paper contains a detailed analysis of this class of functions, based on a novel normal form as polynomial functions over the Boolean field. The concept of layer is introduced that stratifies variables into different classes depending on their level of dominance. Using this layer concept a closed form formula is derived for the number of nested

Cleon Skousen, a man more insane and nasty than Welch and a figure so extreme that ultimately even the Birch-supporting leadership of the Mormon Church had to distance itself from him…
So, Beck’s “9/12 Project” is canalizing old racist and clerical toxic-waste material that a healthy society had mostly flushed out of its system more than a generation ago, and injecting it right back in again. Things that had hidden under stones are being dug up and re-released. And why? So as to teach us anew about the dangers of “spending and deficits”? It’s enough to make a cat laugh. No, a whole new audience has been created, including many impressionable young people, for ideas that are viciously anti-democratic and ahistorical. The full effect of this will be felt farther down the road, where we will need it even less.
