Mack Scogin, architect of Carnegie Mellon University's Gates Center for Computer Science and Hillman Center for Future-Generation Technologies accepted the 2012 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Honor Award for Architecture at the AIA National Convention and Design Exposition in Washington, D.C. Ralph Horgan, associate vice provost for Campus Design and Facility Development; Randal E. Bryant, dean of the School of Computer Science (SCS), and Guy blelloch, professor of computer science, were also on hand for the awards ceremony at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The Gates and Hillman centers, which opened in 2009, is one of just nine recipients worldwide of this year's Honor Awards, the architectural profession's highest recognition of works that exemplify excellence. The centers, home to four SCS departments, were designed by Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects of Atlanta, Ga. The buildings enclose 217,000 square feet of offices, classrooms and collaborative spaces in... - Carnegie Mellon

Publication year: 2011 Source: Developmental Biology, Available online 23 November 2011 Elik Chapnik, Vered Sasson, Robert blelloch, Eran Hornstein DiGeorge syndrome (DGS), characterized genetically by a deletion within chromosome 22q11.2, is associated with a constellation of congenital heart defects. DiGeorge critical region 8 (Dgcr8), a gene that maps to the common deletion region for DGS, encodes a double stranded RNA-binding protein that is essential for miRNA biogenesis. To address the potential contribution of Dgcr8 insufficiency to cardiovascular development, we have inactivated Dgcr8 in cardiac neural crest cells (cNCCs). Dgcr8 mutants displayed a wide spectrum of malformations, including persistent truncus arteriosus (PTA) and ventricular septal defect (VSD). Interestingly, Dgcr8-null cNCCs that properly migrated into the cardiac outflow tract (OFT) proliferate normally and differentiate into vascular smooth muscle cells. However, loss of Dgcr8 causes a significant portion... - Elsevier Microbiol*

This is the first in a series of posts about program derivation. In particular, I am attempting to derive a matrix multiplication algorithm that runs efficiently on parallel architectures such as GPUs. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I’ve been contributing to the Accelerate project. The Accelerate EDSL defines various parallel primitives such as map, fold, and scan (and many more). The scan primitive (also known as all-prefix-sums) is quite famous because it is useful in a wide range of parallel algorithms and, at first glance, one could be forgiven for thinking it is not amenable to parallelisation. However, a well-known work efficient algorithm for scan was popularised by Guy blelloch which performs \(O(n)\) work. The algorithm is undeniably clever. Looking at it, it is not at all obvious how one might have gone about developing it oneself. A recent series of posts by Conal Elliott set out to redress this situation by attempting to derive the algorithm from a high level... - Julian Porter
