PLoS One. 2011;6(11):e27883 Authors: Miyama A, Saito Y, Yamanaka K, Hayashi K, Hamakubo T, Noguchi N Abstract DJ-1, the causative gene of a familial form of Parkinson's disease (PD), has been reported to undergo preferential oxidation of the cysteine residue at position 106 (Cys-106) under oxidative stress; however, details of the molecular mechanisms are not well known. In the present study, mechanisms of DJ-1 oxidation induced by 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) were investigated by using SH-SY5Y cells. The treatment of these cells with 6-OHDA caused an obvious acidic spot sift of DJ-1 due to its oxidation. However, when catalase, which is an hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2))-removing enzyme, was added during the treatment, it failed to prevent the oxidation induced by 6-OHDA, suggesting that electrophilic p-quinone formed from 6-OHDA, but not H(2)O(2), was responsible for the DJ-1 oxidation. benzoquinone,... - Steve Koch

Affective.com: Modulation of Mast Cell and Basophil Functions by Benzene Metabolites.

Affective.com Modulation of Mast Cell and Basophil Functions by Benzene Metabolites. - http://affective.com/news... November 26 from Affective | Health... - Comment - Like Authors: Triggiani M, Loffredo S, Granata F, Staiano RI Abstract Benzene is a carcinogenic compound used in industrial manufacturing and a common environmental pollutant mostly derived from vehicle emissions and cigarette smoke. Benzene exposure is associated with a variety of clinical conditions ranging from hematologic diseases to chronic lung disorders. Beside its direct toxicity, benzene exerts multiple effects after being converted to reactive metabolites such as hydroquinone and benzoquinone. Mast cells and basophils are primary effector cells involved in the development of respiratory allergies such as rhinitis and bronchial asthma and they play an important role in innate immunity. Benzene and its metabolites can influence mast cell and basophil responses either directly or...MedWorm Message: Please support the DoctorsInChains.org campaign for the health workers in Bahrain. #FreeDoctors - Affective.com
Elina: Massively Parallel Computer Built From Single Layer of Molecules

Elina Massively Parallel Computer Built From Single Layer of Molecules October 28 from Slashdot - Comment - Like djeps sends in this excerpt from the Physics arXiv Blog: "Japanese scientists have built a cellular automaton from individual molecules that carries out huge numbers of calculations in parallel. ... At the heart of their experiment is a ring-like molecule called 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-p-benzoquinone, or DDQ. This has an unusual property: it can exist in four different conducting states, depending on the location of trapped electrons around the ring. What's more, it's possible to switch the molecule from one to state to another by zapping it with voltages of various different strengths using the tip of a scanning tunnelling microscope. It's even possible to bias the possible states that can form by placing the molecule in an electric field. Place two DDQ molecules next to each other and it's possible to make them connect. ... When one molecule changes its state, the change in configuration ripples from one molecule to the next, forming and reforming circuits as it travels." Read more... - Elina
